Pilot’s Cabin

Pilot’s Cabin is two comfortable log cabins next to the old El Mirador airstrip, now known as the Berg Air airstrip, in the Cathkin Valley, Central Drakensberg. In addition, there is Pilot’s Cabin 2. The Berg Air airstrip has a lifestyle centre which includes a restaurant, brewery, chocolate factory, craft store and more to come… It is a fun experience for the family.

What makes these cabins special are their particularly rustic experience with beautiful views from a wooden deck onto a game farm teeming with Eland, Springbok and a range of other wildlife, with spectacular views of the Drakensberg in the background.

There are two small dams next to the cabin, which is full of Bass. So please bring your fishing rod along. Moreover, you may be lucky to enjoy a special fish braai while watching the sunset.

Pilot’s Cabin is also close to the wide range of hiking trails at the Monks Cowl entrance to the Drakensberg World Heritage site. Just follow the R600 right to the end of this road. There is also a 20-kilometre trail run and mountain bike trail that starts just across the road from Berg Air. Please remember to pay a small fee to use this trail. Full details are provided at the craft brewery.

Moreover, there are many other activities to participate in in the vicinity of Pilot’s Cabin. These include horse riding, hot air ballooning, helicopter flips, zip lining, e-biking, Scootours and abseiling.

One of the most important events that take place next to Pilots Camp is “Wave Camp“. This is one of the biggest gatherings of the gliding fraternity in South Africa. It takes place in August.

It is important to note that the cabin has an external kitchen and private outside showers with warm water. In addition, they are a short walk from the cabin.
